The final word came in today from Alice K. Diddle, TSgt, USAF NCO In Charge, Media Relations USAF Air Demonstration Squardron ” Thunderbirds ” congratulating Jeff Clark on being selected for a flight with the Thunderbirds!

Jeff will be in Thunderbird #8 with Captain Michael Fisher who is the advanced pilot / narrator. He has logged more than 1,400 hours flight time in the F-16. The flight is scheduled for 10:00 AM Friday, April 27th.

The trappings of his childhood bedroom were high-flying and patriotic: Planes dangling from the ceiling, space shuttle wallpaper, and red, white and blue carpeting.They would form a fitting backdrop for Bryan Lilley’s later life. The longtime event producer and aviation buff has operated successful auto and airplane exhibitions and has now taken on a new venture: the resurrection after five years of Fort Lauderdale‘s signature air show.

“I just love space and aviation,” he said.

Lilley, 42, who commutes from his Cocoa Beach oceanfront condo to prepare for the Fort Lauderdale show on the weekend of April 28-29, has plenty of experience organizing massive events. “I’ve been around events pretty much since I could walk,” he said. “I went to my first one when I was 3.”

That would be one of the auto shows put on by Liberty Productions, the Harrisburg, Pa., company owned by his father, Robert. Lilley joined the company right out of high school, and over the next 10 years he and his father grew the operation from three to 18 auto shows.

In 1999 father and son sold their company to Motor Trend Magazine, where Lilley ran the auto show division. After three years, he quit to travel the world. Then, in 2005, he found himself in discussions with NASA about a way to celebrate the space agency’s 50^t^h anniversary. Two years later he produced the World Space Expo at Kennedy Space Center.

“It was like a world’s fair for space,” he said.

In 2007, Lilley attended the last running of the Fort Lauderdale Air & Sea Show, which became grounded because of a lack of sponsors. “I’d never seen a waterfront air show before,” he said. “I thought, ‘How does anybody do an event this big?’ ”

Lilley soon found out. Inspired, he produced an air show in Ocean City, Md., in 2008 that still runs every year. In 2009 he produced the Cocoa Beach Air Show, another annual event. Last April, with a scant year’s lead time, he and developer Dev Motwani hatched a plan to produce the Lauderdale Air Show, a new version of the old production.

There were local businessfolk to schmooze, sponsors to secure, city officials to sweet talk and performers to attract. Lilley juggled schedules for fliers, ground operations, hospitality personnel, flight officers, two dozen contractors, hundreds of volunteers and more than 100 food booth operators.

Performing pirouettes, corkscrews, dives and loops will be the Air Force’s Thunderbirds, the Navy’s F-18 Hornet, the Navy Seals Leap Frogs and aerobatic daredevil Rob Holland, among other aerial acts.

“We bring together multiple armies of people to be able to make the show happen,” Lilley said.

The show is expected to cost more than $1 million and would be considered a success if it doesn’t lose money.

“It would be wonderful to break even,” Lilley said. Yet, “To be doing air shows and doing them in a grand scale on the beach, there could not be a more amazing, perfect thing for me to do.”

Fort Lauderdale, FL will play host to Lauderdale Air Show 2012 during Fleet Week. Fans of the event can attend two free pre-show parties on April 26 and 27, before the spectacle kicks off with the 101st Airborne Flag Jump on Saturday April 28 and extends through Sunday April 29.

Prior to 2007, Fort Lauderdale had hosted this event for 13 straight years, before it lost funding due to a lack of corporate sponsorship. The city recently signed the event to a three-year contract and pledged to cover up to $150,000 for event expenses.

Bryan Lilley is leading the air show event and has successfully produced many air and land exhibitions, including the World Space Expo at Kennedy Space Center. Lilley, a Florida native, comes from a family-run event promotion background. The event
is expected to cost over $1 million to produce, but Lilley is confident that it will be a success.
The air show will include both civilian and military aircraft. The Black Diamond Jet Team, Red Bull Air Force, and GEICO Skytypers are among the scheduled civilian performers. F-15 Eagles, F-5 Tigers, B-1 Bombers, and Navy Seals Leap Frogs
highlight the United States military performances.

AP Photonews photographer Jeff Clark will be flying onboard one of the F-16 Thunderbirds scheduled to perform during the air show. Clark underwent thorough medical exams and was even fitted for a custom flight suit. He is one of only six members of the media selected to fly as part of the F-16 trials.
The air show festivities take place at Show Center, located along A1A. The best viewing areas are located within the Bennett Auto Supply Drop Zone. Fans should enter at Sunrise Blvd and A1A. Admission to this area is $29 per day and VIP access can be
added via The Clubhouse Chalet, Colonel’s Club VIP Stand, and the Pelican Perch Rooftop Deck.

Fans can also view the air show for free in the Family Zone, located on A1A between Sunrise Blvd. and Vistamar St. Coolers are allowed to be brought in, but alcoholic beverages must be purchased through on-site vendors.
